Senior Police Officer Phoukham Tran, medically retired after being critically injured in the line of  duty, has died. He was 65-years-old. 

At the time of his retirement, SPO Tran had served with the Des Moines Police Department for 30  years. 

On 19 August 2011, at approximately 11:55 p.m., SPO Tran was struck by a pick-up truck while working a traffic control post at E. 30th Street and Grand Avenue during the Iowa State Fair. The  impact threw SPO Tran nearly 50 feet, and resulted in multiple critical injuries.  

The Des Moines Police Department Traffic Unit investigated this incident. Keith Edward Terry, 36- years-old at the time of the incident, was found to have a blood alcohol concentration greater than  three times the legal limit. Terry was convicted in 2012 of OWI and Serious Injury By Vehicle, and  was sentenced to seven years in prison. He was paroled in 2013. 

SPO Tran was a highly-respected police officer and member of the Des Moines Department family,  and will forever be remembered for his selfless service to the community.
