Obituary for Retired SPO Steven Anderson
It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of Retired Police Officer Steve Anderson on Tuesday evening at Des Moines Methodist Hospital. Officer Anderson, a dedicated 30+ year veteran of DMPD, succumbed to a brief battle with cancer.

Steven Leo Anderson, age 70, passed away Tuesday, January 30, 2024, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Steven was born March 24, 1953, in Des Moines, Iowa to Jacolyne (Bradley) and Leo Anderson. He graduated from East High School where he was in the East High Hall of Fame for his community service. Steven served in the United States Air Force from 1971-1977, and continued to serve with the Air National Guard. He earned his associate’s degree from Des Moines Area Community College.
Steven was a cadet with the City of Des Moines from 1971-1975, and a senior police officer from 1975 until his retirement in 2012. He was proud to have been an advisor to the Des Moines Police Explorer Post 21 from 1988-2000, during which he estimated he worked with over 800 kids. Steven was instrumental in the Firearm Training Programs through the State of Iowa from 1993-2017, conducting Permit to Carry training. Steven was a member of East Gate Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed camping, traveling, and was a fan of Iowa State University athletics and the Chicago Cubs.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Renee Anderson; children, Ginny Anderson, Katie (Ben) Ford, and Andy (Lori) Anderson; grandchildren, Natalie Ford, Cameron (Sydney) Miller, Justin Miller, and Conner Anderson; sisters, Vicki (Gary) Stroud and Nancy (Richard) Kalina; brothers-in-law, Thomas (Nancy) Clark, John (Shirley) Calvert, and Herk (Karen) Calvert; many nieces, nephews, other family, countless friends, and his extended Explorer Family and the Police Department.
Steven was preceded in death by his parents, Jacolyne and Leo Anderson; granddaughter, Hailey Renee; sisters, Susan Clark and Lynette (Larry) Smith; and his brother, Kurt Anderson.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, February 5, 2024, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 6, 2024, also at Hamilton’s, with burial at Laurel Hill Cemetery after the funeral.
